When Cox was asked to reinterpret the iconic Herman Miller Bubble Lamp to articulate themes of diversity and inclusion, the studio’s response was to look outwardly towards Australia’s Indigenous story and inwardly to designers’ individual backgrounds. These notions of diversity and history informed the material choices and design decisions behind Cox’s reinterpretation.

Introducing Herman Miller Australia's Diversity in Design Series in collaboration with The Local Project Featuring design firm SJB and the Nelson Bubble Pendant. Tasked with reinterpreting the iconic Herman Miller Nelson Bubble Lamp to articulate themes of diversity and inclusion, SJB created a design whose strong base reflects the importance of community support and, in the process of working on the project, rediscovered as a team the joys of in-person collaboration within the office.

Charles and Ray Eames, designers of the Eames Shell Chair famously said: “The role of the designer is that of a very good, thoughtful host anticipating the needs of his guests.” Most of the designs that came out of the Eames Office did just that—suiting a need and solving a problem. But what is perhaps most remarkable about Charles and Ray’s 1950 design for the Eames Shell Chair is just how many of life’s requirements they were able to meet in a single, gracious form.
