In Europe, since June 2022, all Sayl work chairs and stools have contained ocean-bound plastic (OBP) – further enhancing the sustainability story of Sayl. Now Herman Miller, with their new learnings, have implemented them globally.

The key element behind the design of Sayl with its fewer parts and less material is to reduce the environmental impact, while providing ergonomic support to users. Now with the inclusion of OBP it further enhances its sustainability criteria.

By adding ocean-bound plastic to products, Herman Miller estimates it will divert up to 326 metric tons of plastic from the ocean annually, which is equivalent to preventing 32 million water bottles.*

In Asia, including Australia, the Sayl Work chair and stool contain OBP in all colours; Black, Fog & White. There is nearly 1.4 kg OBP in the Black, and nearly 1 kg OBP in the Fog & White.

Inspired by suspension bridges— structures that deliver the most using the least material—Sayl’s 3D Intelligent® suspension back lets you stretch and move, striking a healthy balance between support and freedom. The elastomer strands vary in thickness and tension to provide greater support along the spine where you need it most, and less everywhere else, so you are free to move.

Sayl designer Yves Béhar (pictured) and Herman Miller’s development team considered and reconsidered every part of the design – and, in the end, created a full family of seating that sets the reference point in its class for quality, performance and design.

Furthermore, the steel components of Sayl are 100% recyclable and contain 3.7% recycled content. The metal components are finished using materials that emit negligible volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

Overall, Sayl is designed for minimal material use, resulting in reduced energy requirements, and its easy assembly makes it cost-effective.

Another important environmental criterion is its durability, backed by Herman Miller’s 12 years industry-leading standard warranty.
