Charles and Ray Eames adapted moulding techniques developed during World War II to produce their classic shell chair's simple, gracious form. In 2001, Herman Miller reintroduced the original Eames Moulded Plastic Chair (1950) in a durable, 100 percent recyclable polypropylene. In 2022, they enhanced it once more by crafting select recycled chairs with 100 percent post-industrial recycled plastic. The subtle matte texture of the re-engineered plastic shell maintains the soft tactility of the original design, available in your choice of vintage and contemporary colours. This low wire base shell chair makes for a perfectly pitched lounger.

Thanks to a new proprietary process of producing fiberglass, Herman Miller is once again able to produce the Eames original 1950 Moulded Fiberglass Chair safely by means of a less volatile, monomer-free “dry bind” process. Like the Eameses’ original single-shell chairs, our new fiberglass finish has the same covetable surface variation and tell-tale fiberglass striations that have attracted avid vintage collectors for decades.

The Eames LAR (Low Armchair Rod Base, aka Cats Cradle Base) was one of the original five Shell Chair models that Herman Miller introduced in 1950. Its discontinuation in the mid-1960s made it an instant collector's item. Its return as the Eames Shell Chair with Low Wire Base once again converts the one-piece armchair shell to a perfectly pitched lounger.
