Nelson®  Platform Bench (1946)

designed by George Nelson

Nelson Platform Bench

Equal parts seat and surface, the Nelson Platform Bench emerged from George Nelson’s Fortune magazine office to join his first Herman     Miller Collection in 1946.

Made with polished chrome or ebonised wood legs, and available in three lengths with a choice of finishes.

It serves as a bench, low table or foundation for the Basic Cabinet Series.

Nelson Platform Bench

A landmark of modern design, the bench has the clean, rectilinear lines that reflect designer George Nelson’s architectural background and his insistence on what he called “honest” design: making an honest visual statement about an object’s purpose.

Nelson Platform Bench

For Herman Miller's influential design director George Nelson, utility was as important as beauty.

Solid wood slats are spaced to let air and light through, sealed with a clear-coat finish and finger-jointed for superior strength, Available with finger-jointed wood base or slender chromed metal legs for superior strength. Serves equally well as bench or table.

All of which make the Patform Bench ideal for homes, offices, and public areas.

Nelson®  Swag Leg Desk & Table

designed by George Nelson

Nelson Swag Leg Desk and Table

A Graceful Curve

George Nelson began with the legs, insisting that they be made of metal, machine formed and pre-finished. And beautiful. He wanted that graceful curve. He also wanted them to be easy for the consumer to assemble, so the desk and tables could be shipped flat to save on costs.

Swaging — using pressure to taper and curve a metal tube — proved to be the best way to produce the legs, which are 16-gauge steel and have adjustable glides. Nelson added solid walnut stretchers that bolt to the legs for a stable, durable base that is shared by the desk and tables.

Once he got started, Nelson didn’t stop at desks. He made a work table that lets you spread out papers and tools. He made two dining tables — one round, one rectangular — with the walnut base stretchers in an X formation to make room for your legs. It’s all about the legs.
